Arsenic geochemistry of groundwater in Southeast Asia

Kyoung-Woong Kim, Penradee Chanpiwat, Hoang Thi Hanh, Kongkea Phan, Suthipong Sthiannopkao

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 420-433 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0158-2

Abstract: The occurrence of high concentrations of arsenic in the groundwater of the Southeast Asia region has received much attention in the past decade. This study presents an overview of the arsenic contamination problems in Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Thailand. Most groundwater used as a source of drinking water in rural areas has been found to be contaminated with arsenic exceeding the WHO drinking water guideline of 10 μg·L . With the exception of Thailand, groundwater was found to be contaminated with naturally occurring arsenic in the region. Interestingly, high arsenic concentrations (>10 μg·L ) were generally found in the floodplain areas located along the Mekong River. The source of elevated arsenic concentrations in groundwater is thought to be the release of arsenic from river sediments under highly reducing conditions. In Thailand, arsenic has never been found naturally in groundwater, but originates from tin mining activities. More than 10 million residents in Southeast Asia are estimated to be at risk from consuming arsenic-contaminated groundwater. In Southeast Asia, groundwater has been found to be a significant source of daily inorganic arsenic intake in humans. A positive correlation between groundwater arsenic concentration and arsenic concentration in human hair has been observed in Cambodia and Vietnam. A substantial knowledge gap exists between the epidemiology of arsenicosis and its impact on human health. More collaborative studies particularly on the scope of public health and its epidemiology are needed to conduct to fulfill the knowledge gaps of As as well as to enhance the operational responses to As issue in Southeast Asian countries.

The Geochemistry and Mineralization Evolvement of Gejiu Tin Ore Deposits

Qin Dexian,Li Yingshu,Fan Zhuguo,Chen Aibing,Tan Shucheng,Hong Tuo,Li Lianju,Lin Xiaoping

Strategic Study of CAE 2006, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 30-39

Abstract:

It had been believed that the genesis of Gejiu tin deposits were granitic mineralization of Yanshanian epoch by most researchers for a long time. However, recently the authors obtain a great deal of information to indicate that the Gejiu tin deposits are occured as mineralization of many time periods and many sources, being divided as three metallogenic series namely the seabed basic volcano- metallogenic series, the seabed exhalative hydrothermal metallogenic series in the Indo-Chinese epoch and the granitic superimposed metallogenic series in the Yanshanian epoch. The metallogenic pattern may be summed up as “rift setting—the volcano-sedimentary metallogenises—the exhalative hydrothermal sedimentary metallogenises—the granit rebuild superimposed metallogenises”.The paper demonstrater the metallogenic viewpoint in terms of the trace rare earth element, stable isotopes and fluid inclusion.

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 2,   Pages 119-124 doi: 10.1007/s11705-009-0068-x

Abstract: The combustion characteristics of bio-oils derived from rice husk and corn were studied by thermogravimetryin air and nitrogen atmosphere, we analyzed the combustion characteristics of different kinds of bio-oilsin different atmospheres and worked out the combustion kinetics parameters of the bio-oil, providingreliable base data for the burning of bio-oil.The thermogravimetry indicated that the combustion process of bio-oil was divided into three stages.

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 4, doi: 10.1007/s11783-019-1148-x

Abstract:

A two-stage BTF system was established treating odorous off-gas mixture from a WWTP.

The two-stage BTF system showed resistance for the lifting load of H2S and VOSC.

Miseq Illumina sequencing showed separated functional microbial community in BTFs.

Avoiding H2S inhibition and enhancement of VOSC degradation was achieved.

Key control point was discussed to help industrial application of the system.
